Joint Statement Between the Department of Energy of the United States of America and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye on the Establishment of the United States-Türkiye Energy and Climate Dialogue

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, met today (May 8) in Washington, DC, and released the following statement:  

The Department of Energy of the United States of America (DOE) and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye (MENR),  

Acknowledging the importance of the U.S.- Türkiye Strategic Mechanism that was launched by the Governments of the United States and Türkiye in 2021 to strengthen their bilateral relationship; 

Recognizing that both countries are committed to sharply reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and thus mitigating the harmful effects of climate change;  

Seeking to transform their energy systems, which will require fundamental research, technical innovation, substantial investment, and collaboration; and 

Intending to enhance and deepen their strategic cooperation in the field of energy, 

Held the first meeting of the US- Türkiye Energy and Climate Dialogue (hereinafter referred as ECD) on May 8, 2024, in Washington, DC, with the participation of U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar. 

DOE and MENR reaffirmed that a strategic energy relationship between the United States and Türkiye would contribute to the transition toward a cleaner and greener energy future, provide a structured opportunity to increase security of energy supply, and advance bilateral economic and trade goals.  

DOE and MENR welcomed the establishment of the ECD, which aims to bring the United States and Türkiye together at both senior and working levels to combat climate change and promote energy security, while strengthening their economic and political ties. The ECD aims to facilitate technical cooperation across energy and climate issues on best practices, joint development of effective policies, bilateral trade and investment, and joint research and development. 

The ECD is expected to be co-chaired at the ministerial level and to commence its activities within four main working groups: 

• Clean Energy, Energy Efficiency, and Grid Resilience  
• Natural Gas/LNG 
• Regional Cooperation 
• Combating Climate Change and Clean Energy Finance 

Through these four working groups, DOE and MENR intend to develop concrete proposals to intensify their energy cooperation.
