SNC-Lavalin awarded ACEC-BC's Award of Excellence for John Hart Hydroelectric Generating Station Replacement Project

April 18, 2019

SNC-Lavalin was awarded the Award of Excellence (Energy & Industry) by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia (ACEC-BC) for its work on BC Hydro's John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project. Located in the Campbell River, British Columbia, the replacement project created a reliable, safe and environmentally friendly generating station with an installed capacity of 138 MW. The John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project is Canada's first P3 (public-private partnership) project in the hydropower sector.

"We appreciate the support and forward thinking afforded by BC Hydro in recognizing our innovative design to move the new powerhouse underground, as well as their high regards and expectations on environmental protection," said Travis Smith, Senior Vice-President, Global Projects, SNC-Lavalin.

"The ACEC-BC Award of Excellence recognized the results of innovative engineering and problem solving that made the John Hart project a benchmark of success, including societal benefits to the local economy, jobs and the environment. I want to thank BC Hydro and all the partners and suppliers who helped contribute to a legacy that will provide clean, sustainable energy for generations," added Paul Sawyer, InPowerBC's Project Co-Representative and CEO.

Successes and achievements have been numerous throughout the project. An innovative approach built the new powerhouse underground instead of beside the river to minimize the environmental footprint and offer higher safety in case of a seismic event. The removal of the existing generating facility, including the three penstocks, powerhouse and two of the three surge towers will further reduce that footprint and have the site better fit in to the adjacent Elk Falls Provincial Park. A fantastic safety record was achieved with over 3.5 million person hours of work without a lost time accident. Operationally commissioned in November 2018, the new facility will power over 80,000 homes.
