MidAmerican Energy Races To 100 Percent Renewable Energy Vision with Drake Relays

April 25, 2018

MidAmerican Energy Company will again support the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee, by providing clean, renewable energy for the meet.

MidAmerican Energy will certify that an Iowa wind farm generated the energy for this year's event.

"We are excited to bring our 100 percent renewable energy vision to the Drake Relays for the fifth year in a row," Kathryn Kunert, MidAmerican Energy's vice president of economic connections and integration, said. "We are proud to support the Drake Relays, and appreciate the opportunity to help athletes and fans understand the benefits of renewable, affordable wind energy that we harvest here in Iowa."

MidAmerican Energy announced its 100 percent renewable energy vision in 2016 at the same time it launched its Wind XI project. An industry leader in environmental stewardship, MidAmerican Energy is already about halfway to its goal of delivering 100 percent renewable energy to its customers in Iowa.

When complete in 2019, the $3.6 billion Wind XI project will add up to 2,000 megawatts of capacity, and produce enough wind energy to power more than 840,000 average Iowa homes.

"MidAmerican Energy's commitment to powering the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee with renewable energy has become part of the fabric of America's Athletic Classic," said Blake Boldon, the Franklin P. Johnson director of the Drake Relays. "We're excited that MidAmerican Energy is again powering the Drake Relays with renewable energy produced right here in Iowa. Athletes from around the world cherish the opportunity to race on the Blue Oval and MidAmerican Energy's support of renewable energy helps illuminate those performances inside Drake Stadium."

MidAmerican Energy donates renewable energy certificates
Since 2014, MidAmerican Energy has donated renewable energy certificates to the Drake Relays from its Pomeroy wind farm in Iowa, located in Pocahontas and Calhoun counties. RECs are tradeable, non-tangible U.S. energy commodities that represent an eligible renewable energy source generated the electricity. In this instance, the certificates verify the Pomeroy wind farm produced Drake Relays' energy.
