Santee Cooper's New Jamison Solar Farm Begins Soaking Up the Sun

April 26, 2019

More than 4,400 solar panels near Orangeburg, South Carolina, are soaking up the sun and producing electricity at Santee Cooper's new Jamison Solar Farm. The 1.2-MW solar farm, named for the nearby Jamison community, was built in partnership with Tri-County Electric Cooperative and is part of an industrial park being developed by the cooperative.

"We're excited to have another renewable energy project feeding electricity to the grid," said Marc Tye, Santee Cooper executive vice president and COO. "This solar farm will be an asset year-round, and particularly in the summer. The flatter fixed tilt of the panels at Jamison allows us to maximize its energy production to coincide with summer afternoon peaks."

Another important trait is Jamison, like a number of other Santee Cooper renewable energy projects, was built in part by using Green Power funds. When customers from Santee Cooper and the state's electric cooperatives voluntarily purchase Green Power, we invest that revenue into new or expanded sources of renewable energy.

"We've been promoting Green Power for nearly two decades and commend those who choose to purchase it," said Tye. "From the start, our vision for Green Power has been to use funds from Green Power sales to develop new renewable energy sources right here in South Carolina, and Jamison Solar Farm is a great example of fulfilling that vision."

Including the Jamison Solar Farm and the 75 MW solar contract announced yesterday, Santee Cooper currently has 184 MW of renewable energy online or under contract.

Jamison is located on 5.4 acres at the Interstate 26 and Highway 601 interchange, and it is visible from I-26. In its first year, the solar farm is projected to generate 2,261 megawatt hours of electricity, enough to power 163 average South Carolina households.

Santee Cooper is South Carolina's largest power provider, largest Green Power generator and the ultimate source of electricity for 2 million people across the state. Through its low-cost, reliable and environmentally responsible electricity and water services, and through innovative partnerships and initiatives that attract and retain industry and jobs, Santee Cooper powers South Carolina.
