New Solar Project Offsets Two-Thirds of Oakland Affordable Housing Community's Energy Use

January 31, 2024

The CPUC this month joined a ribbon-cutting celebration for a community-driven solar project in Oakland that received funding through the Solar on Multifamily Affordable Housing (SOMAH) program, providing residents with clean energy and monthly savings.

The SOMAH program provides incentives for solar energy photovoltaic systems for multifamily affordable housing. St. Mary's Gardens offers 101 affordable-living homes to seniors 62 years or over who qualify as very low or extremely low income. SOMAH partially funded the St. Mary's Gardens project, for which Sunrun installed solar panels on apartment rooftops, providing tenants with 117 kilowatts of solar power.

The solar system generates enough energy to offset nearly twothirds of tenants' energy usage, saving each household about $35 per month on their electricity bill through virtual net metering.
