Science Based Targets Initiative confirms E.ON targets for reducing CO2 emissions

June 3, 2022

E.ON is consistently committed to the sustainable development of the energy world. This focus is also reflected in ambitious climate targets, which have now been officially endorsed by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi). With its Group-wide sustainability strategy, E.ON is explicitly committed to the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement. Against this backdrop, the energy company has set itself science-based emissions reduction targets. The validation by SBTi has now confirmed that these targets are suitable for limiting global warming to the level required by the Paris Agreement.

Leonhard Birnbaum, CEO of E.ON, explains: "Every investment in the transformation of our energy system is at the same time an investment in climate protection and in supply security which is needed now. Our goal is clear: a CO2-free, digital energy world. With our two major pillars of smart energy networks and innovative customer solutions, we are fully committed to this transformation."

A key component of the sustainability strategy E.ON is pursuing is climate neutrality by 2040. During this period, E.ON aims to reduce emissions that can be directly influenced (Scope 1 and 2) by 100 percent. By 2050, E.ON also aims to reduce its Scope 3 emissions by 100 percent compared to the base year 2019.

The Science Based Targets Initiative is a partnership of the CDP, United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) organizations. The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently evaluates corresponding targets set by companies.
