SENER
Low-emission biomass power plant in Puertollano, Spain

December 18, 2018

SENER continues the construction of the low-emission biomass power plant located in Puertollano (Ciudad Real, Spain) for ENCE Energía y Celulosa. This is the third turn-key or EPC contract that SENER has signed for this client, after the successful construction of two biomass power plants in Spain, located in Mérida and Huelva. In all cases, the contract covers the design, supply, construction and commissioning of the plant, as well as the operation and maintenance during the first two years of operation.

In the biomass plant construction project in Puertollano, three new milestones have been reached: the completion of the silo foundation, the beginning of the boiler assembly and biomass processing and treatment system.

This means that SENER is carrying out the assembly of the boiler's metallic structure. The first pressurized parts have been received on site and it has begun the modules preassembly and welding activities to be ready for heavy lifting maneuvers by midge December. Besides, works on Biomass treatment plant and hoppers for the storage silos have begun.

This new contract affirms the trust that ENCE group's placed in SENER's technology, after successfully executing the project in Mérida, which came into operation in 2014 and is now running at full capacity, and in Huelva, that is currently completing its construction phase, and it is expected to enter into operation in the third quarter of 2019.

SENER TECHNOLOGY

All three power plants apply SENER technology, a highly-efficient, regenerative thermodynamic cycle with reheating capability, which includes a furnace with a reheater and a turbine with two bodies - high and low pressure -, as well as several extractions. Also, the plant will be refrigerated using cooling towers. All of this will contribute to bringing the plant's gross output to over 35 %. Due to their innovative design, which combines high efficiency and low emissions, ENCE's three power plants designed by SENER will serve as a benchmark among biomass power plants.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PUERTOLLANO BIOMASS PLANT

The facility consists of a biomass fired power plant, fed by forestry, farming and agricultural industries. It will enter into operation in 2020 and, like the previous two, will be one of the largest low-emission and high-efficiency residual biomass renewable energy plants in Spain.

This Projects follows the model of the previous plants in terms of the wide range of types of biomass the plant will be able to operate with, thanks to the advanced fuel processing system that SENER will incorporate into its design. This system will be used to receive, process and store the fuel, and has already been applied in the previous power plants with very good results.

It will also have the best gas combustion and processing systems, which will guarantee compliance with the demanding limits of the new European BREF (Best Available Techniques Reference) regulation that establishes the benchmarks for the industry's best practices in Europe for Large Combustion Plants.
