Alstom signs new contracts in Brazil to supply hydro mechanical equipment to Belo Monte complex

July 15, 2015

Alstom concluded two contracts[1] with Norte Energia to provide equipment to the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, located at Xingu River, in Brazil's northern Pará state.

The first one (contract amendment), awarded to Alstom and other companies through ELM Consortium[2], covers the supply of a new turbine and two generators to the hydroelectric site. Alstom's share in ELM Consortium is worth around 70 million. This share corresponds to 33 % of the total agreement with Norte Energia. The delivery is scheduled to be completed in 2018.

The second contract will be carried out by an Alstom-led consortium with Bardella for the supply of hydro mechanical equipment. The total amount of the second contract is 14 million, with an Alstom's share of 4.3 million. The full scope of the project includes 10 provisional stop logs for Pimental's water intake and 18 provisional stop logs for Belo Monte's draft tube. As part of the Alstom-led consortium, Bardella and IMMA (Indústria Metaúrgica e Mecânica da Amazônia), a joint-venture between Alstom and Bardella, will be the project's subcontractors. The delivery is scheduled to be completed in November 2016.

Belo Monte is the world's fourth-largest hydroelectric power plant and will have a planned capacity of 11.233,1 MW. This plant, which is expected to take 8 years of construction, will meet the electricity needs of 60 million people in 16 states plus the Federal District. "Alstom is honored to be part of the major hydro project in Brazil. With this contract, the company reinforces its commitment to lead power technology and offer a renewable and clean energy source to the population", said Jacques Hardelay, Hydro Senior Vice President in Alstom's Renewable Energies.

In January of 2012 an Alstom-led consortium, including the German company Voith and the Austrian company Andritz, was chosen to supply 20 turbine-generator sets (14 Francis turbine-generator of 611MW each for Belo Monte hydropower plant and 6 Bulb turbine-generators with rated power -on the shaft - of 39,8MW each for Pimental hydropower plant) and other electromechanical equipment of these plants. As part of this provision, Alstom is in charge of delivering to Belo Monte: 7 Francis turbine-generator sets, hydro mechanical equipment, bus bars and gas insulated substations (GIS) to the 18 generator units of the plant.
