Western Area Power Administration Announces Final Boulder Canyon Project Power Allocation

Western Area Power Administration has announced its final allocation of power from the Boulder Canyon Project Post-2017 Resource Pool in the Federal Register.

Western Administrator and CEO Mark Gabriel said, "This decision provides for the wide-spread use, benefit and stability of cost-effective, clean, renewable, reliable federal hydropower for 50 years to 59 new customers. This is the culmination of an extensive, collaborative process, and we appreciate the involvement of the Hoover contractors, stakeholders and interested parties throughout this process to allocate this Boulder Canyon Project power."

Ron Moulton, Western's Senior Vice President and Desert Southwest Regional Manager, said, "This process has served to re-emphasize the value of Federal hydropower as a clean, renewable resource. We received 107 applications seeking more than 590 megawatts from the available resource pool of only 80.6 megawatts. This final allocation ensures the wide-spread use of this valuable resource."

After conducting a public process, Western published final marketing criteria and made a call for applications on December 30, 2013. Applications from those seeking an allocation of power from Western were due on March 31, 2014. The BCP Proposed Allocation was determined by applying the final marketing criteria to the applications received during the call for applications. Western published this notice to finalize allocations after considering public comments on its proposed allocations and substantiating the loads of all potential allottees. Contract negotiations will begin in 2015.
