Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution first utility in Ontario to support electric bus project

March 28, 2017

Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution Ltd. (Newmarket-Tay Power), York Region and the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) have created a unique and forward-thinking partnership that will help bring six electric buses and one electric charging station to Newmarket. Newmarket-Tay Power will maintain an overhead on-route bus charging station, which was a key driver in moving this pilot project forward.

"We are proud to be working with our utility provider, Newmarket-Tay Power, to once again be a leader in bringing green technology to our community. This is a big step towards reducing our overall carbon footprint and creating a sustainable future," says Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen.

This is part of the Pan-Ontario Electric Bus Demonstration and Integration Trial, which is a first of its kind across the globe. CUTRIC has brought together transit agencies, funding partners, research teams, technology tools, manufacturing stakeholders and multiple levels of government to design manufacture and deploy zero-emission electric buses and charging infrastructure in cities across Canada. So far, Brampton is the only other municipality in Ontario to announce participation in this ground breaking trial.

Newmarket-Tay Power is the first utility in Ontario to participate in an electric bus pilot project. The charging station will be located at the Newmarket Bus Terminal (Davis Drive and Eagle Street) and will be maintained by Newmarket - Tay Power, who will work closely with York Region and York Region Transit to provide data and analysis.

"Electrification of transit is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and utilities have a crucial role in this as the infrastructure support and electrical energy supplier in their service territories," says Paul Ferguson, President, Newmarket-Tay Power. "Newmarket-Tay Power's inter-agency cooperation with the Town of Newmarket and York Region Transit will support the Ontario government's Climate Change Action Plan. Equally important, it will support the government's goals in electricity conservation through electricity load management that integrates the principles of electric vehicle charging, battery storage and distributed generation." The new, battery-operated electric buses produce zero greenhouse gas emissions and will work towards the elimination of noise pollution and idling. They are expected to reduce operating and maintenance costs and create employment opportunities as the buses are manufactured in Canada and the charging stations will have localized service and support teams.

This initiative is consistent with Newmarket's commitment to being a leader in innovation and environmental sustainability. This will help meet the goals of the Town's recently adopted Community Energy Plan. The Community Energy Plan is one of the first of its kind in Ontario and sets clear targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and clear actions for achieving those results. This cutting-edge pilot also supports Ontario's Long Term Energy Plan and assists both the Federal and Provincial government in implementing their Climate Change Action Plans to reduce GHG emissions.
