MidAmerican Energy's New Signature Program Gives Green Energy Benefits to Customers

April 24, 2017

MidAmerican Energy Company, a national leader in the development of wind energy and low electric rates, is launching the MidAmerican Energy GreenAdvantage program, to give customers the benefit of the green energy that is delivered to them. The new program was filed with the Iowa Utilities Board and is awaiting approval. If approved by the board, customers will be able to claim 47% renewable energy use in 2016.

"MidAmerican Energy GreenAdvantage is an important part of our 100% Renewable Vision that we announced in 2016. For years we have been developing wind to serve our Iowa customers. This program takes our vision one step further by sharing with customers the benefits of the green energy they use," said Bill Fehrman, president and CEO of MidAmerican Energy Company.

The new MidAmerican Energy GreenAdvantage program is free to MidAmerican Energy customers but is particularly important to businesses. A significant benefit of the program is being able to claim the renewable energy produced and used in Iowa to meet sustainability goals. MidAmerican Energy customers already enjoy the ninth-lowest energy rates in the country; now, they also can claim the percentage of energy they receive from the country's most robust renewable energy program. This percentage will grow year-over-year as the $3.6 billion Wind XI project is completed with no increase in rates thanks to MidAmerican Energy's 100% Renewable Vision. When businesses are looking for a reason to locate or expand in areas of Iowa served by MidAmerican Energy, this free program is a true competitive advantage and elevates the value proposition of the state of Iowa and MidAmerican Energy.

"By allowing companies to take credit for renewable energy at no cost, we are making Iowa a unique choice for business growth," said Debi Durham, director, Iowa Economic Development Authority. "Businesses looking for cost-effective energy services derived from environmentally friendly, renewable sources can find that in Iowa when coupling MidAmerican Energy GreenAdvantage with its 100% Renewable Vision. Programs like these help make Iowa the best choice to locate or expand a business."

As part of the MidAmerican Energy GreenAdvantage program, MidAmerican Energy has asked the Iowa Utilities Board to verify its annual production of energy delivered to its customers from clean, renewable sources, such as wind, as a percentage of total energy production. MidAmerican Energy's customers, in turn, can promote their green energy usage to employees, customers, industry partners, stakeholders and the communities they serve.

Value of green verification
"People want to work for, invest in and do business with environmentally responsible organizations," Fehrman said. "MidAmerican Energy provides the renewable energy those organizations can use to meet their goals with a verified, smart, efficient way to evaluate and promote their practices." The fact that we have been able to grow the Iowa wind industry and launch this without needing any increase in customer prices to do it is a huge success for the state and its business climate."

Economic impact
MidAmerican Energy already has worked with the state of Iowa to develop the infrastructure that supports renewable energy. MidAmerican Energy has the largest percentage of renewable energy as part of its portfolio in the country for an energy provider of its size. Renewable energy supports more than 6,000 jobs in Iowa, and the MidAmerican Energy GreenAdvantage program will create additional employment opportunities.

No-cost programs like MidAmerican Energy GreenAdvantage program help underline Iowa's commitment to locally produced renewable resources and make it easier for companies to build and maintain a sustainable business - especially with corporations that have clean energy policies as part of their location requirements.

"Iowa is a proven leader in renewable energy, and we should leverage that," said Durham. "MidAmerican Energy's innovative programs highlighting access to renewable energy sources help Iowa bolster its economic development efforts."
