MidAmerican Energy Company Keeps Drake Relays' Clean Energy Goals on Track

April 28, 2017

When it came time to plan the 108th Annual Drake Relays, presented by Hy-Vee, organizers had one last hurdle to clear - keeping the lights on without worrying about the environmental impact. Fortunately, MidAmerican Energy Company is the perfect partner to help run the Relays.

Drake University will use renewable energy certificates donated from MidAmerican Energy's Pomeroy wind farm, located in Pocahontas and Calhoun counties in Iowa, to offset 100% of the electricity the Relays will use. This is the fourth-straight year MidAmerican Energy has partnered with Drake to deliver clean energy to the Relays.

"We're pleased to again join with our partners at MidAmerican Energy to have the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee powered by renewable energy produced right here in Iowa," said Blake Boldon, the Franklin P. Johnson Director of the Drake Relays. "Every year, the Drake Relays brings the finest professional, collegiate and Iowa high school athletes to Drake Stadium and we're proud that MidAmerican Energy will use their renewable energy to shine a light on those stellar athletes and their performances during the four days of competition at the Drake Relays."

"We're proud to continue providing clean, renewable energy for our friends at the Drake Relays," said Bill Fehrman, president and CEO of MidAmerican Energy. "Also, our presence at the Drake Relays gives fans a chance to discus' all the ways wind energy can benefit them."

When it comes to wind energy, MidAmerican Energy sets the bar higher. MidAmerican Energy recently announced the first two sites for the Wind XI development, a $3.6 billion investment which when completed will bring 2,000 more megawatts of wind energy generation to the state of Iowa - without requesting an increase in customers' rates to pay for it. This project gets MidAmerican Energy even closer to the finish line of its vision of 100% renewable energy for customers in the seats at Drake Stadium and across the service territory.
