Town of Cardston and ENMAX unveil two significant net zero solar projects

August 21, 2017

The Town of Cardston and ENMAX are excited to announce the completion of two net zero solar installs. More than 500 solar modules have been installed on the rooftops of Cardston's Charlie Cheeseman Memorial Ice Arena and Civic Centre, producing 100 per cent of the facilities' annual energy consumption. Together, these systems will reduce electricity costs by almost $20,000 annually.

"The Town of Cardston believes in a long-term approach to sustainability," said Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Shaw. "Converting the Civic Centre and Arena to net zero energy is the first of many steps in a commitment to exploring cleaner forms of energy within our community."

The two solar installs will generate over 200 MWh of electricity annually, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 136 tonnes per year - the equivalent of taking 29 vehicles off the road annually. View our drone footage.

"We're proud to work with the Town of Cardston on a solar investment that will have a positive impact for years to come," said Jason Atkinson, Director of Operations, Distributed Generation at ENMAX. "Cardston joins the ranks of many communities across Alberta that are realizing the benefits of choosing solar."

ENMAX works closely with businesses and municipalities of all sizes to help make their renewable energy plans a reality. To-date, ENMAX has installed over 50 per cent of Alberta's solar generation.

Project Details

  • 546 solar modules covering an area of approximately 13,000 square feet.
  • The solar system generates 100 per cent of the Civic Centre and Arena's annual energy consumption.
  • Based on current consumption, combined savings will be almost $20,000 annually at current rates, for the next 25 years.
