SSEN statement on Clean Growth Strategy announcement

October 16, 2017

Responding to the UK Government's Clean Growth Strategy announcement today (10/12), specifically the intention to include island onshore wind in the next Contracts for Difference Auction in spring 2019, David Gardner, Director of Transmission for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), said:

"We welcome today's announcement that the UK Government intends to include island onshore wind in the next CfD auction and we remain fully committed to take forward our advanced proposals for new transmission links to the Scottish Islands.

"In anticipation of a positive policy announcement for inland onshore wind, we have been working closely with developers, our supply chain and other key stakeholders to develop the necessary transmission infrastructure to unlock the vast renewable potential of Scotland's three island groups.

"We will now continue to engage with developers, our supply chain, Ofgem, Government and other stakeholders to take forward proposals to provide new transmission connections to the Scottish island groups in a timely manner, as soon as developer commitment and regulatory approval is confirmed."

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks

We're responsible for maintaining the electricity networks supplying over 3.7 million homes and businesses across central southern England and north of the Central Belt of Scotland. We own one electricity transmission network and two electricity distribution networks, comprising 106,000 substations and 130,000 km of overhead lines and underground cables across one third of the UK. Our first priority is to provide a safe and reliable supply of electricity to the communities we serve in Scotland and England.
