ONTARIO POWER GENERATION HYDROELECTRIC FACILITIES WIN PERFORMANCE AWARDS
Alexander Generating Station Best Performing in 2015

February 8, 2016

Four Ontario Power Generation (OPG) hydroelectric stations have been recognized for excellent performance, including Alexander Generating Station (GS) awarded the Overall Best Performer for 2015 by Navigant Consulting. Located on the Nipigon River approximately 16 km northwest of the Township of Nipigon, Alexander Generating Station (GS) produces enough electricity each year to power about 40,000 homes. It has served Ontario safely and reliably since 1930.

"This international award recognizes hydro plants for excellence in operations and maintenance cost, plus availability and reliability performance," says Dale Probasco, managing director of Navigant. "This is a significant achievement and I want to congratulate OPG."

In addition, OPG's Caribou Falls Generating Station north west of Kenora on the English River was recognized as best performer for small, high use stations. Des Joachims Generating Station north west of Pembroke on the Ottawa River was noted as one of the best performers for medium, high use stations and Sir Adam Beck No. 2 Generating Station in Niagara Falls was recognized as one of the best performers among large stations.

"I'm proud of the recognition our plants received," says OPG's President, Renewable Generation and Power Marketing, Mike Martelli. "We continue to demonstrate OPG's commitment to operating these heritage assets safely, efficiently and reliably. The awards are a tribute to our skilled people across the province."

Each year OPG's hydroelectric generating stations' performance and reliability are benchmarked against hydroelectric facilities across North America and other parts of the world.
Navigant is a consulting firm with offices throughout the world. This year's study included 145 plants representing a total of more than 40,000 MW of hydro capacity.

OPG provides over half of the electricity used by Ontario homes and businesses and 99.7 per cent of the energy we produce is free of emissions that cause smog and climate change. OPG's hydro fleet includes 65 stations and 240 dams across Ontario.
