CAPITAL REGIONAL DISTRICT
Hartland Renewable Natural Gas Facility recognized with Climate Change Business Journal Award

February 13, 2026

The Capital Regional District (CRD) is pleased to share that GHD has been honoured with a Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ) Business Achievement Award for their work on the Hartland Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Facility.

GHD was a key partner that helped bring the Hartland RNG facility to life, serving as the project's technical advisor and providing multidisciplinary engineering, permitting, environmental, and construction support. The CRD is proud to work alongside GHD and deeply appreciates the dedication, innovation and leadership they brought to this milestone project.

The Hartland RNG Facility captures landfill gas produced by decomposing waste and transforms it into Renewable Natural Gas. That gas is then injected directly into FortisBC's natural gas system, where it helps heat homes and businesses and fuel vehicles across the region.

The facility is designed to produce up to 360,000 gigajoules of RNG each year. Over the next 25 years, this will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 475,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing the total emissions from 105,000 Canadian homes over the same period.

Landfills are among the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in most communities, and Hartland Landfill alone accounts for roughly 10% of the region's emissions. Capturing and repurposing this gas is one of the most meaningful actions the CRD can take to reduce its carbon footprint and support a cleaner future.
