Waga Energy (EPA: WAGA), a specialist in Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production from landfill gas, and Decatur Hills Landfill, part of the family-owned waste management group Best Way Disposal, have commissioned a new RNG production unit in Greensburg, Indiana. The unit upgrades the gas naturally emitted by landfilled waste into clean, local, and renewable energy, injected directly into the local gas grid.
The production unit relies on the WAGABOX®, a patented purification technology developed by Waga Energy that upgrades landfill gas into grid-quality RNG. Waga Energy financed the construction of the unit , built it, and will operate it for at least 20 years and sell the RNG. Decatur Hills Landfill also invested in civil work and the natural gas interconnect.
The unit is designed to process up to 1,000 scfm of raw biogas and can produce approximately 203,000 MMBtu (60 GWh) of RNG per year at full capacity. The RNG is injected directly into the local gas grid, thanks to a 3-kilometer connection financed by Waga Energy and Decatur Hills Landfill as part of this project. By substituting fossil natural gas, the unit will avoid the emissions of more than 15,800 metric tons of CO equivalent per year[1].
RNG, a pillar of energy transition, is a local and renewable energy source that can replace fossil fuels in transportation, industry and heating. The result of 15 years of development, the WAGABOX® technology is revolutionizing the recovery of landfill gas through cryogenics. It optimizes the energy production of landfill sites and delivers high-quality RNG, which can be injected directly into natural gas distribution grids, regardless of the biogas composition.
Curt Publow, Environmental Compliance Manager: "Decatur Hills is very excited to be part of this great clean energy project. It has taken a long time to find the right partner, and we think that Waga Energy has some unique solutions that will bring this resource from the landfill to the energy grid as a sustainable, renewable fuel."
Jessica Routley, CEO of Best Way Disposal: "For decades, our family has believed in operating our landfills responsibly and continually investing in better solutions. We are proud to partner with Waga Energy to transform landfill gas into a valuable renewable energy resource, creating lasting environmental benefits for the communities we serve."
Guénaël Prince, CEO of Waga Energy Inc.: "We are proud to bring this new unit our eighth in operation in the United States online alongside Decatur Hills Landfill. Their commitment, rigor, and long-term vision made this project a success, and they have been an exemplary partner throughout. Thanks to this joint effort, the gas spontaneously produced by the Decatur Hills site, until now flared, will supply the local community with clean, local and renewable energy."
