EL PASO ELECTRIC
EV Carsharing Comes to Las Cruces

July 14, 2025

This fall, getting behind the wheel of an electric vehicle in Las Cruces will be as easy as reserving a ride and plugging in. Thanks to a partnership between the City of Las Cruces, El Paso Electric and Forth, a new EV carsharing program is launching and will bring affordable, sustainable transportation to the community.

Beginning in fall 2025, drivers will have access to two shared EVs that may be rented for a very affordable $5 per hour or $50 per day, plus tax. Available to those 21 and older with a valid driver's license and clean driving record, the program is a convenient way to try out an EV without having to worry about maintenance, insurance or long-term commitment.

This effort is part of the Affordable Mobility Platform project, a national initiative partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed by Forth, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the equitable advancement of clean transportation. Additional funding comes from EPE's Transportation Electrification Plan. The AMP project aims to boost access to clean transportation in underserved areas by offering low-cost EVs and charging solutions.

"Reliable transportation opens doors to opportunity whether it's getting to work, picking up groceries, or visiting friends and family," said Jennifer Zavon, program manager at Forth. "By expanding our EV carshare to Las Cruces, we're helping people access the everyday essentials of life while reducing pollution and creating healthier communities."

EV carsharing helps reduce air pollution and carbon emissions contributing to a positive environment and public health. On-site charging will be available for the program's EVs along with two public level 2 charging stations for customers with their own EVs.

"El Paso Electric is proud to bring an affordable, short-term EV rental program to Las Cruces," said Angie Rodriguez, manager of electrification at EPE. "This program strengthens our commitment to expanding access to electric transportation and charging infrastructure.

"With a variety of incentives and flexible rate options already in place, we're especially excited to offer our community a first-hand experience with EVs to show how simple and convenient clean transportation can be."

"The City is excited for this opportunity for people to rent an electric vehicle," said Charlie Mahady, Sustainability Specialist for the City of Las Cruces. "Be it for an errand, an appointment or meeting friends across town, this program will help offer reliable transportation to all in need.

"These electric vehicles will also help improve local air quality by reducing vehicle exhaust."

The Las Cruces carsharing program will run until the end of 2026, with hope of developing a long-term sustainable transportation model.
