Eneco's sustainability partnership with Google expands into Belgium

October 14, 2025

Eneco has expanded its successful partnership with tech company Google into Belgium. Google has taken out a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply its data centres in Belgium with wind energy from Belgian wind farms.

Eneco and Google have already entered into several contracts for solar and wind energy in the Netherlands over the past decade. The wind energy powering a data centre in the Eemshaven port in Groningen Province is produced on land, on the IJsselmeer lake and in the North Sea. The energy supplied under the Belgian PPA will be produced by wind farms with a combined capacity of 54 MW.

Google provides services around the globe, including cloud services, email, AI products and its famous search engine. The continued reliability, sustainability and availability of those services depends on data centres such as the centre in Belgium. This Wednesday, during a trade delegation to California led by Princess Astrid of Belgium, Google announced plans to expand that data centre.

Google has the stated ambition of making its operations fully carbon-free, 24/7, by 2030. To achieve this, it is investing in green energy from local assets to supply as much of the power for its data centres as possible.
