May 11, 2018

National Grid in Massachusetts has been named as one of a select group of utilities that procured and connected the most megawatts (MW) of solar energy and procured the most storage in 2017, earning top spots on the annual Top 10 utility industry lists compiled by the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA).

In survey results released April 25, National Grid in Massachusetts ranked No. 6 on the Utility Energy Storage list, with 7 MW of energy storage procured in Massachusetts in 2017. National Grid in Massachusetts also scored the No. 10 spot on the Utility Solar list with 227 MW procured and connected in 2017. This is the fourth time National Grid in Massachusetts has made SEPA's Top 10.

"We are honored to be recognized for the tremendous strides we have made on behalf of solar and energy storage expansion in Massachusetts," said Marcy L. Reed, president of National Grid in Massachusetts. "Harnessing the sun to generate clean energy is an important piece of our commitment to provide a balanced energy portfolio affordable and accessible to all our customers."

In Massachusetts, National Grid has connected more than 900 megawatts of customer-owned solar to the grid along with 21 MW of company-owned solar. The Company has another 14 MW of company-owned solar under development as part of its Phase 3 Solar Innovation Project. National Grid also plans to install a total of 7 MW of battery storage at two Massachusetts solar generation facilities, making it the first investor-owned utility in the region to add storage to its renewables program.

National Grid's products, programs and pilots empower customers and accelerate the pace of change. The company plays a pivotal role embracing technology as it develops sustainable solutions that include solar generation, energy storage, electric vehicles, and more.

"This year's Top 10 lists reflect a pivotal moment in the U.S. energy transition, as utilities increasingly focus on solar and storage as distributed resources providing value to customers and the grid," said Julia Hamm, President and CEO of SEPA. "Beyond its impressive numbers, National Grid embodies a strong model for innovation and leadership that utilities across the country will continue to build on as we move toward a clean, smart and resilient energy future."

SEPA awards are given in four categories: Top 10 utilities for most new solar megawatts and most new watts per customer, and Top 10 utilities for most new storage megawatts and most watts per customer. The Top 10 winners in all categories were recognized at the annual SEPA Utility Conference.

The 11th annual survey collected figures from over 400 utilities across the country on solar, energy storage and demand response connected to the grid in 2017 and since 2007 for solar.
