Read the Key Findings today!
Published annually, the EGEC Geothermal Market Report provides a snapshot of the European geothermal sector, highlighting current trends and future prospects.
Key Findings from the latest edition:
-
Three new geothermal power plants came online in 2024 (one in Austria, two in Turkey), adding 40 MW of baseload capacity. Europe now hosts 147 geothermal electricity plants, with around 50 more in development.
-
Ten new Geo-DHC systems were installed in 2024 (three in Poland, two in the UK, and one each in France, Greece, Romania, Spain, and the Netherlands), bringing the total to 412, with hundreds more projects underway.
-
Sales of heat pumps dropped across Europe in 2024, except in Switzerland, mainly due to weak policy support. EGEC expects the long-anticipated European Geothermal Action Plan to boost the market.
-
Exploration activities are growing fast 17 surveys in 2024 (up from 10 in 2023), with at least 10 3D seismic campaigns already started in 2025.
-
EGEC foresees a sharp rise in drilling from 2025, driven by the 50 planned power plants, 500 DHC projects, and growing exploration campaigns across Europe.
