Voith Hydro signed a contract with AXIA Energia to modernize the synchronous condensers at the Recife II Substation in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. The project includes a digital and technological upgrade of electrical, mechanical and instrumentation systems originally installed in the 1980s.
This is Voith's third delivery for the company involving digitalization through HyCon systems Voith's proprietary solutions designed to increase reliability, availability and operational efficiency of energy generation and transmission assets.
"The delivery for Recife II reinforces our commitment to acting as AXIA Energia's partner in standardized and predictive modernization projects, always focused on ensuring maximum asset availability," said Leandro Lucas, Sales Director for Services at Voith Hydro in South America.
Considered the main substation in the region, Recife II is responsible for supplying electrical power and reactive power to the entire metropolitan area of Recife, serving approximately 3.7 million people. The contract includes the modernization of the systems of two 150-MVAr synchronous condensers, whose components have become obsolete due to the unavailability of spare parts for equipment that has been in operation for more than four decades.
Among the main systems and equipment to be modernized by Voith are control, protection, excitation, vibration monitoring and instrumentation systems. The scope also includes high-, medium- and low-voltage auxiliary electrical systems such as circuit breakers, disconnect switches, start-up and auxiliary transformers, reactors, distribution panels, lighting systems and power outlets.
Voith will also perform upgrades to mechanical auxiliary systems, such as hydrogen purge systems, water circulation systems and oil circulation systems.
"With the integrated supply of electrical and mechanical systems, the Recife II Substation will benefit from state-of-the-art solutions for technological upgrades and modernization of auxiliary equipment, contributing to the reliability of the region's electrical system," highlights Guilherme Gonçalves, Application Engineering Manager for Automation and Digital at Voith Hydro in Latin America.
